Belize Estate’s influence accounts in part for the colony’s reliance on the mahogany trade throughout the rest of the h century and the first half of the h century. Perceptions of the government’s relief effort as inadequate were aggravated by its refusal to legalize labour unions or introduce a minimum wage.
You are right Alex. But i think there were other companies who pushed government around. Eg the United Fruit Company. Somebody needs to go look at those long barracks at Middlesex to see if any remnants of their past presence could be found. Or an archaelogical dig to find the old banana farms would be interesting. Blessings. Frantz
