Belize’s first industries exploited biological and human resources to create wealth for British merchants. Starting in the 1950s, Belizeans took over management of the national resources but few novel export oriented industries were sustained.
At the turn of 21st century, our main industries were dedicated to agriculture and tourism. The agro industries were sugar, bananas, citrus, papayas and marine products. While the agro industries remained steady, the development of a new industry was in its growth stage. This was because petroleum in commercial quantities was discovered in Spanish Lookout in 2005.
Even with the advent of an oil industry, we see that tourism was the most important source of foreign exchange. The resilience of this industry in the face of a global economic downturn indicates that tourism continues to offer opportunities to investors in Belize.
In the next 25 years, Heath Foods and Service based industries including Business Process Outsourcing, Distribution, Education, Financial Services, Health and Social Services and Sports and Cultural Serves will become more important.
